July 10th-21st, 2017
Samuel Merritt University, Oakland, CA
Hello BHUS scholars!
Congratulations again on your acceptance into our program! Welcome to our online portal where you’ll find all the resources you’ll need for the next two weeks with us. We’re very excited to have you!
Forms
The following forms need to be filled out electronically and submitted. If we do not receive these forms, you will not be able to participate in the program.
Stipend
The max stipend amount awarded is $500. The stipend is given based on daily attendance and completion of both pre and post surveys (see next section to complete). For each day that a student is absent, $50 will be deducted from the total stipend amount. Please note that because we will need to check attendance, the stipend will be sent out approximately two weeks after the completion of the program.
To receive the stipend check, you are required to fill out and return a W-9 form. You will receive this on the first day of the program to fill out.
Program Surveys
These surveys are anonymous and completion is required for each student. Please fill out the pre-survey on the first day of the program and fill out the post-survey on the last day of the program. After submission, please follow the instructions to submit your name to let us know that you have filled it out. Thank you for your feedback!

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do we meet?
The program runs Monday through Friday (July 10-21) from 8:30 am – 3:30pm every day. Please refer to these maps: Satellite or Image view. On the first day that we meet, please go to the “Registration Tables”. Every day after that, we will be meeting at the “Oval”.
Can I take BART?
Absolutely. BHUS students often take BART and travel from all over the Bay Area. You will go to MacArthur BART station and then there is a Samuel Merritt shuttle bus that takes you directly to campus and runs every few minutes. Please refer to the SHUTTLE MAP and SHUTTLE SCHEDULE
Is parking available?
The hospital and campus parking structures are close to the Peralta Pavilion but are fairly expensive. There is street parking but it is limited timing where cars must be moved every two hours so that is prohibitive as well. We highly recommend not relying on driving and parking as your form of transportation.
Do we have a dress code?
Summer time in Oakland can start off colder in the mornings and hotter in the afternoons. We ask that you dress in layers if needed and in business casual wear. Stay away from wearing anything too revealing, uncomfortable shoes (no high heels) and anything of high value (expensive jewelry, etc). We want you to be comfortable, but presentable when working with health professionals.
For students that are relying on BART, can we set up a buddy system with other students going the same way?
We encourage students to buddy up if they’re all coming from the same BART stops. However, we are not able to give out any contact information without permission. What we can do – on orientation day, we group students up coming from the same locations and they can arrange it amongst themselves
Do I need to bring my own lunch?
No, lunch will be provided every day at the hospital cafeteria. There are many different options to choose from.
