On the evening of Monday, December 5th, 2016, our FACES scholars at the Life Academy of Health & Biosciences and their mentors celebrated the holiday season with their annual holiday party.
The scholars are matched with their mentors at the beginning of the school year during a Mentor Matching Night event. The mentors help guide their individual scholars throughout the school year by attending events with them, as well as maintaining communications via phone and email for anytime they have questions.
The mentors also assist the scholars with college applications, essays, school work, stress, family life, or anything that comes up during their internships. This also includes offering advice on careers, colleges and providing their own personal stories.
The mentors are undergraduate students from local colleges, such as UC Berkeley, Laney College and Berkeley City College. This year, two of the mentors are actually FACES Life Academy alumni.
This year’s holiday party included a mixture of community building activities, one on one time, games and food. The scholars and mentors were also able to work together to create collages based on their own cultural practices around the holidays. The collages were shared throughout the group to encourage scholars to learn more about each other’s cultures and how other people celebrate the holidays.
The group is set to meet once again in February for a Saturday field trip to San Francisco to go bowling!
