The FACES for the Future program at St. Rose Hospital (FFSR) in Hayward was recognized by Superbowl 50 Fund as their 14th Playmaker in June 2015. The program was honored for its work in training and mentoring high school juniors and seniors from Southern Alameda communities interested in health careers. While 82% of students served report financial struggle and 59% report surviving trauma, 100% of all FFSR students graduate from high school and 61% of them are the first in their families to do so.
FACES Hayward used its Playmaker grant to provide additional program experience to its 30 current students and support its FFSR Student Camp at San Francisco State University.
FACES Hayward also recognized Dr. Tomás Magaña, FACES Hayward Founder and FACES Coalition Director, as their Playmaker.
“Seeing firsthand that students in Southern Alameda County lacked resources available in Oakland, Dr. Magaña committed to bringing a FACE program to St. Rose Hospital,” Jasmine Nakagawa, FACES program coordinator. “His commitment to the Hayward FACES program is strong and he continues to work with the FACES students – teaching workshops, championing a mentorship program with Samuel Merritt University, attending parent meetings and advocating for the program.”
