“Salutations! My name is Shakir Mackey and I am a class of 2009 FACES alum.
After I got my degree in Psychology from Georgetown College (Minor in Voice), I joined two Bay Area chorales: the San Francisco Bach Choir and the East Bay Symphony Chorus. My first two years back in the Bay Area were spent soul-searching; volunteering and teaching swimming. I then got a job as a Student Support Assistant at Education for Change’s Achieve Academy. After my work with the youth there, I realized that in addition to providing support for children, I wanted to be able to provide a space for healthy minds. I plan on attaining my MSW to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
Currently, I work as a Behavioral Interventionist at Vincent Academy in West Oakland. After school at Vincent Academy, I run an an all-girls STEM club. Recently, I have received at a position at Galileo Camps as the Lead Science Instructor in Alameda.
My goal is to uplift my community utilizing community resources and mental health practices. I am very thankful for FACES providing a door for me to walk through that really propelled my career choices.
Dr. Magaña and Mr. René served as positive male role models for me and really kicked me where it counted. I could have had a very different ending to my life and due to the rich support that they provided, I have been able to just now begin my life in a field I really enjoy.”
