Karina Salcedo (she, her, hers) is a 2017 FACES Oakland Behavioral Health Pathways alumni. She holds an Associate’s degree from Merritt College and a Bachelor’s in Global Health from UC San Diego.
Being part of FACES solidified Karina’s career interests and determination to pursue a career in the medical field. Reflecting on her experience in FACES and volunteering at Street Level Health, she remembers humbling moments shared with community members seeking health services. These positive reactions from patients served as powerful motivation, inspiring Karina to address barriers in health and reduce disparities in communities.
A key message Karina wants to share with current FACES students, supporters, and stakeholders is to be the future you want to see. She reflects on her experience and urges others to take advantage of all the resources provided throughout one’s professional journey. She says it is vital to make connections, share, and apply your knowledge everywhere you go! Karina acknowledges that FACES is an invaluable program that provides endless support and exposes you to the health field while also allowing you to be part of great events and opportunities.
Nowadays, you can find Karina at UC San Diego pursuing her Master’s degree in Global Health and volunteering at Rady’s Children’s Hospital. She hopes to apply to a nursing or nurse practitioner program in the next application cycle.
