Carlos Hernández Martínez (he, him, él) is a 2011 FACES Oakland Children’s Hospital alumni. He is also a 2017 Behavioral Health Undergraduate Summit alumni! After graduating high school and the FACES Program in 2011, Carlos pursued an undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley where he studied Spanish and Portuguese.
During his time at UC Berkeley, he worked in the Educational Opportunity Program and the Undocumented Student Program. His time spent working in areas of student services and student affairs also led him to become a College Advisor at East Bay Consortium. Since completing his Bachelor’s, Carlos went on to work as a Spanish teacher at his alma mater, pursue a college advising fellowship, and serve as an Academic Counseling Coordinator where he continued supporting underserved youth. Carlos has come full circle; you can find him now working within the FACES team as our newest Program Coordinator in San Francisco!
His participation in the FACES Program during his youth impacted Carlos tremendously. He was encouraged through ongoing mentorship and support from FACES staff. Now, in his professional life, Carlos reflects and honors the contributions FACES had on his career and academic journey.
A key message Carlos would like to share with current students is to build connections, make every opportunity count, and invest in yourself! Carlos acknowledges that the unwavering support he received from FACES helped him believe in himself and the differences he was making and continues to make in the lives of underserved youth.
