The FACES for the Future Coalition and the Health Career Connection (HCC) program have been mutual supporters for many years. On July 26, 2016, FACES hosted a special event for Northern California HCC undergraduate interns at Samuel Merritt University (SMU) in Oakland, CA. The event, titled “Clinical Simulation and Mentoring Workshop”, provided HCC interns with opportunities to experience both clinical simulation and problem-based learning cases, similar to what health professions graduate students engage in.
Students worked with SMU faculty/students and FACES interns to understand how both problem-based group learning and clinical simulation training with high fidelity mannequins complement traditional curriculum in health careers education. Moreover, students had the opportunity to participate in mentoring activities with faculty and students from the variou s departments/disciplines at SMU and at the UC Berkeley’s Joint Medical Program. Students rated the experience overall as “outstanding” and highly impactful. We were very happy to offer these opportunities to HCC interns and were proud to partner with HCC staff to do so.
Thanks also to the wonderful faculty at Samuel Merritt University and the UC Berkeley Joint Medical Program for volunteering their time to work with the students
