Barbara Staggers MD, Co-director

A leader in adolescent medicine and a national authority on high-risk youth, urban and minority youth, violence, and healthcare concerns for multicultural societies, Dr. Barbara Staggers is division chief of Adolescent Medicine at Children’s Hospital & Research Center at Oakland.

Dr. Staggers has served for six years on the National Committee on Adolescence for the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is a member of the National Advisory Boards of California Wellness Foundation’s Violence Prevention and Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Initiatives. She is also involved in the Family PACT Clinical Practice Advisory Board for the State of California, the California State Immunization Advisory Board, the Statewide Youth Advocacy and Policy Committee, the Planning Committee of Family PACT Clinical Education and Training, and the Children NOW Managed Care and Adolescent Health Advisory Committee.

Dr. Staggers is recipient of numerous honors and awards, including a National Child Labor Committee Award; National Violence Prevention Council Angel of Peace Award; Alumna of the Year, School of Public Health, UC Berkeley; Profiles of Excellence; and State, County, and Citywide Resolutions.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley. She graduated the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), School of Medicine, and earned a master’s in public health from the University of California, Berkeley. She completed her pediatric residency at Children's Hospital Oakland and her fellowship in Adolescent Medicine at UCSF.
