Summer Medical Academy
The FACES for the Future Program at Children's Hospital and Research Center at Oakland (CHRCO) has been successfully preparing Bay Area youth for careers in the health professions for the past 6 years. In the summer of 2005, the FACES Program and CHRCO launched its new Summer Medical Academy- a two-week educational program designed to expose high school students to the profession of medicine. The program was offered at Children's Hospital Oakland from July 11-22, 2005. The Academy ran Monday-Friday from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. This year, the Summer Medical Academy will be held on July 10-21, 2005. The summer program is open to any motivated high school student 15 ½ years and older who is interested in learning about medicine and medical school. The program is seeking applicants who are highly motivated, responsible and genuinely interested in learning what it is like to be a physician. The summer program is designed to provide students with exciting and educational opportunities that relate to the practice of medicine. Workshops will be led by CHRCO staff, physicians, and local experts. Some of the workshops that will be offered will include:
Participants from last year said:
"I am now confident that I want to pursue a career in medicine. I had doubts before- but my fears were cleared up." The tuition of $1500.00 will cover all program costs, including program materials, transportation for field trips, and daily breakfast/ lunch. Please note that the program is unable to offer financial assistance to students at this time. We hope that you will pass this information on to students and families who you feel might be interested in participating with this program.
