Health Careers Curriculum

Student enrolled in the FACES Program participate in a health careers preparatory curriculum. This curriculum, designed by the FACES staff, follows Health Career Education standards recommended by the California Department of Education (CDE). In addition, all curriculum developed by the FACES Program is based upon the National Health Care Skill Standards, the WestEd Laboratory for Educational Research and Development, the National Consortium of Health Science and Technology Education (NCHSTE) and the SCANS Skills.

In Year 1 of the program, students participate in a core curriculum that establishes a foundation for basic skills pertinent to all levels of health care workers.
These include:
  • Ethics and Confidentiality
  • Hospital Safety
  • Infection Control/Standard Precautions
  • Communication Skills
  • Legal Considerations/HIPAA Requirements
  • Employability skills
  • Teamwork
Classes are designed to be interactive, educational, and provide hands-on learning opportunities that develop employable skills for the future. Additionally, emphasis is placed on skills which focus on professional development (e.g., grooming, interviewing, communication, etc.). Students who successfully complete all components of this curriculum are then allowed to participate in clinical rotations during Year 2.
