High School Program
Mentoring & Academic Programs

Who is eligible to apply?

FACES currently has formal partnerships with six high schools in Alameda County of Northern California.   Potential applicants must be enrolled at one of the following high schools:

Berkeley High School (Berkeley)
Emiliano Zapata Street Academy (Oakland)
Life Academy (Oakland)
MetWest (Oakland)
Oakland Technical High School (Oakland)
Skyline High School (Oakland)

FACES serves disadvantaged high school students from demographic groups that are underrepresented in the health care professions: Native American, African American, Latino, South East Asian and Pacific Islander. Current 10th graders who meet these criteria are welcome to apply to the program.

Schools not currently partnering with FACES are welcome to discuss the possibility of developing a partnership with FACES. Please contact the Program Coordinator, Catherine West at Catherine@facesforthefuture.org if you are interested.

FACES does not currently offer clinical internships to undergraduate, graduate/professional students and healthcare professionals. Individuals wishing to volunteer at Children's Hospital and Research Center at Oakland, should contact the Volunteer Services Department at 510-428-3885, x.3471.

When do I apply?

FACES begins recruitment at each of the schools in December. Applications are generally due in January. Sophomores begin the program in March.

How do I apply?

Each school has a designated teacher who coordinates all student applications. If you are interested in obtaining an application, contact FACES to determine which teacher you need to communicate with.

Can I still apply if I am not a sophomore?

No. FACES is an extensive three year program and all applicants are expected to start in the 10th grade of high school.

How can I still participate with FACES if I am not a high school student?

College students are needed to tutor our FACES students. Additionally, mentoring opportunities for health care professionals, recent college graduates and graduate students with FACES students are available.   For further information, visit our Mentoring and Academic Programs link. For tutoring and mentoring opportunities, please contact Tyrell Jacksoni at 510-428-3885, ext. 2949 or Tyrell@facesforthefuture.org .

FACES relies heavily upon the generous support of volunteers to help our youth.   If you are interested in volunteering with FACES, please contact Catherine West at 510-428-3885, ext. 5494 or Catherine@facesforthefuture.org .
