FACES Successes

Class of 2003: 24 graduated of an original sophomore class of 27. (88%)
Class of 2004: 22 graduated of an original sophomore class of 28. (79%)
Class of 2005: 20 expected to graduate of an original sophomore class of 25. (80%)
Class of 2006: 21 currently enrolled from an original sophomore class of 28. (75%)
Class of 2007: 34 sophomores selected from 94 applicants.

We are very pleased with the ability of FACES to retain these students in the program for the three-year duration and graduate them from high school, given a recent study from Harvard University that demonstrated that only 48 out of 100 students in the Oakland Unified School District graduate from high school. According to the California Department of Education, most school districts in Alameda County have very low dropout rates; however, the Oakland and Berkeley Unified School districts have had rates significantly higher than the county total (19.7% and 14.7%, respectively) and higher than that for the state of California (11%, 2001 estimate). Indeed, without Oakland Unified, Alameda County’s four-year derived dropout rate would be only 1.1%.
