Academic Enrichment

"Faces for the Future was a great experience. I was able to see both the medical and the administrative side of CHO. I received good advice from the people working in FACES and the UC Berkeley students. I'd like to thank you all for everything that you have done." – Earnestine Harrison

It is expected that all participating students will achieve a level of academic success that will allow them to enter college. Achieving good grades is essential to each student’s future success!
Given this, the FACES Program’s Academic Component strives to prepare each student for college entry by providing them with the academic support and assistance to do well in school and on college preparatory exams. Additionally, the program prepares each student with the study skills necessary for continued success in future academic pursuits.

The Academic Program offers the following services to achieve these goals:

  • Tutoring: Students participate in weekly tutoring. College students from local colleges and universities serve as tutors. Each student is expected to achieve and/or maintain a grade point average of 3.3 or above. Good study skills are taught and continuously reinforced.
  • SAT Preparation: Students participate in SAT preparation classes so as to optimize their performance on this test during the junior year of high school.
  • College preparation: Workshops are held during the junior and senior years of the program which focus on college preparation. Examples of workshop topics include the application process, the college essay, choosing the right college, financial aid, and interviewing. Representatives from local colleges/universities and college students provide much of this content, and serve as important resources for the students.
  • Career choices: The FACES staff works closely with student interns to help them define their career choices and identify specific training programs relevant to these choices. At times, field trips, guest speakers and other activities provide other learning opportunities.
