Academic and Career Programs

“Thanks to all of the supervisors and counselors for their dedication, support and participation in the FACES program for the past three years. Because of you, the future looks promising in the field of medicine. Again, thanks for all your wisdom and encouragement.” – Sachiko Asano-Brooks

The Academic and Career Component of the FACES for the Future is one third of the trilateral approach towards student support that our program has adopted. The Academic and Career element provides academic and social support to high school students via tutoring and career advising. As a part of a larger vision geared towards providing comprehensive support to our students, the Academic and Career Component incorporates mechanisms for feedback and improvement of students, undergraduates and the program itself. We work closely with teachers, counselors, administration and parents to ensure that students’ academic and social issues are addressed at all levels in an individualized way that takes into account different learning styles and unique personalities. Part of the Academic and Career Program of FACES includes the opportunity for enrichment activities, social events and field trips. The individual that runs this component is the Academic and Career Coordinator who is entrusted with the task of implementing the four main elements of the mentoring and academic component: tutoring, mentoring, enrichment and performance monitoring. The aims of the Academic and CareerComponent are to elevate the academic performance and the overall readiness of our students to enter college in alignment with the stated purpose of FACES- to promote the entry of young students of color into health professions.
